There was a time when wearing all black was a sign that someone was in mourning for a lost loved one or belonged to the Goth subculture. But then back in the 1980s the arrival of a number of celebrity designers from Asia like Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons and Yohji Yamamoto transformed wearing black into an intellectual style statement. And Yves Saint Laurent that was fascinated by this color and played with many shades of it throughout his career.
