Breton stripes hail from Bretagne in Northern France, which explains their name. Thick cotton shirts with these stripes became part of the uniform for seamen in 1858, because they were decreed easy to spot in a sea emergency and because the fabric was so hard-wearing. Since that time they became part of French wardrobe classics and then moved all around the world becoming a staple. This year Breton stripes are totally back as a hot trend (though they are timeless anyway), and I’m hurrying to share some hot ideas on wearing them!
A Breton stripe top, white flare jeans, blush heels for a refined and stylish outfit.
A Breton stripe top today should be cropped and fitting or oversized, with long sleeves (or half sleeves but not short ones), and with a high neckline or a square cut if you want a vintage feel. Such a top can be worn with any trousers you like, culottes, a midi wrap skirt and of course jeans. Pair it with something trendy and up-to-date to avoid outdated looks. A Breton stripe top can be a nice solution for work, for every day and even for a date – just add red lipstick. Get inspired!
